An amazing 13" x 42" fringe handwoven scarf made by local artist Mary Rugg. This is a blended scarf made from Kerry Wool and Cushendale Mohair brought from Kerry Woolen Mills in Kerry, Ireland. Mary wove this in her house in Five Points on a Rigid Heddle Loom.

ABOUT

My approach to weaving is based on the interplay of color and texture of fibers to produce unique garments that are silky, lightweight, and reflect my creative spirit!

What began as a barter with a sheep farmer for a spinning wheel and floor loom in the late 70's blossomed into a lifelong passion for weaving. "Your Weaving Grandmother", Margaret Carr in rural upstate New York, her post and beam loom filling the small country living room, shared the craft and ignited my passion.

In the early ‘80’s I studied at SUNY Geneseo with Jan Jackson, mentor and friend, who inspired me to explore my own creative spirit and gain skill and confidence.

A move to Athens in '84 sparked new opportunities for expanding my craft and focusing on weaving as an art form. Exploring the influence of Japanese design through application of the origami technique of paper-folding to textiles proved to be a unique approach and images of the fan and kimono were exhibited in local and regional juried shows and were commissioned.

My passion and discovery continued at "The Weaver's Web" whose owner fiber artist, Erika Lewis exhibited her mastery of the craft, projected her passion, and provided a setting for like creative spirits to work side by side. For 23 years I have explored warp, weft and the age old tradition of weaving with Erika and her coterie.

While weaving took a part-time role due to my career and weaving (raising) our daughter, I am now retired and my new life as a weaver and fiber artist is filled with endless possibilities! The feel of the threads moving through my hands and the drape of a finished garment bring a smile to my heart!

I am in love with color and fiber! Each of the scarves, shawls, and wraps is handwoven on a Schact 8 harness floor loom or Rigid Heddle loom, using centuries old traditions to inspire modern interpretations. My work has been accepted into local and regional juried shows, including: The Lyndon House, OCAF, Handweaver's Guild of America, and the Chattahoochee Handweaver's Guild, among others. Currently I am exploring the use of fine wire in weaving artistic and sculptural pieces! The possibilities are endless!
