Each year, the "Fairlington 5K Silent Auction" raises money for a young girl named Ellie McGinn who suffers from a rare brain and spinal cord condition called LBSL. The disease slowly robs children of their ability to walk, then stand, then coordinate all movements. Research into a cure is underway s currently underway at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. Some proceeds also support physical education activities at Ellie's neighborhood school - Abingdon Elementary.
Now in its 7th year - this auction draws nearly 100 donated items - from signed Nationals and Capitols gear, to sports tickets, vacation rentals, summer camps, jewelry, wine tastings, music lessons, and much, much more.
Bidding opens online April 13 at 9:00 a.m. and closes 8:00 p.m., Friday April 17. There will be a special party at the Fairlington Villages Community Center to wrap-up the event from 6:00 to 8:00 P.m. Free adult beverages and pizza will be served. Free babysitting for potty children, 3 and up is also being provided by the Abingdon PTA at the school.
This event is sponsored by "A Cure for Ellie," Abingdon Elementary PTA, and the Fairlington Citizens Association.
