Description
The Hermitage, a thumb grant property awarded in 1658 is the ancestral home off Richard Tilghman and is still occupied by the family today. The house reflects Maryland history and includes a family grave yard. The tour includes a walkthrough of the main house with a historic narrative by Ben Tilghman, who describes the property, architecture, significant paintings, furniture and personal items that have remained with the house.
Tea will be served in the dining room. Date and time to be determined at a time mutually agreeable.
The property today includes 800 acres with all but 90 in conservation easement and is used for crop fields, woods and water frontage on the Chester River and Tilghman Creek. The 90 acres out of easement includes the main house, several residences, a smoke house, ice house, stable, coachman cottage, and horse barn. A walking tour of the grounds can also be included.
