"Can Opener, Eggs"
August, September, 1988
Rachel Kahn-Fogel was born and raised in Ithaca, New York. She attended Bennington College, earned her B.A. from Cornell University, and her M.A. from Columbia. After teaching in New York City and Ithaca, she moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for 26 years, where she had many one-woman shows, including one at the Louisiana Art and Science Museum. She and Dan Fogel are married and are now residents of Vermont and have two children and two grandchildren.
In her artist statement in Vermont Biz, Rachel Kahn-Fogel writes, "To my mind, painting is an existential act in a universe of the absurd. That is, I believe humans create their own meanings in a universe without its own meaning. And for me, creativity in the form of painting is my life's work. In the face of terror, loss, sorrow, and pain as well as beauty, joy, and the sublime, I use the world of imagination to paint common obiects in incongruous combinations to express these contrasts. I paint in year-long series, and these paintings are selected from my two most recent series. To counterbalance the dark sides of life, I use humor and playfulness to express my pleasure and delight in this existence."
