Description
Mary Wennersten has over 30 years in education as a teacher, interventionist, reading coach, state program specialist, state literacy director and is now a structured literacy consultant. For the past 13 years, she worked for the Arizona Department of Education where she was instrumental in developing the professional development for preK-8th grade reading, spelling, foundational writing, grammar, data analysis, and RTI/MTSS. Mary also supported the work in K-12 Literacy, School Improvement, Early Childhood, English Language Learners and Special Education. Mary got her BA from University of Arizona in Elementary Education and her Masters in Special Education from Northern Arizona University. She has trained Arizona teachers in Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS, Teaching Reading Effectively (TRE and other concepts and systems of change (grammar, spelling, foundational reading skills, MTSS/RTI, data analysis, literacy assessments, instructional coaching and instructional leadership. Because of her own experience as a struggling dyslexic student and having a child with dyslexia, Mary has spent her career in public education improving instruction for all students. Mary is the past-president of the Arizona Branch of International Dyslexia Association and currently is vice-chair for the national IDA. Mary is a Certified Dyslexia Therapist.
