Tom Baird is a craftsman specializing in woodturning from Monterey, Tennessee. He is primarily known for his turned vessels; Tom’s work has been enjoyed by many over the past thirty years.
His hand-crafted pieces are initially turned on a wood lathe using several different techniques and hand-held tools. Each piece is turned, sanded, and finished with a variety of different varnishes. Some pieces are customized using inlays, dyes or resins.
Much of the wood used in Tom’s projects were destined to be burned or left to return to the earth. Using fresh cut logs or discarded wood stock, Tom finds great satisfaction in creating elegant objects from material once considered waste.
Tom’s inspiration comes from nature and the wood itself. As nature has a way of removing distractions and rarely displaying straight lines or right angles, Tom uses this movement in the wood to determine each project’s unique beauty. No two pieces are the same.
