This original carved cedar plaque is by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Lloyd Wadhams, circa 1968. It is signed and measures 12" x 8" x 0.75". The supernatural Thunderbird, expressed here, is a crest of the Wadhams family.

Wadhams was born in Alert Bay in 1924, fishing and carving for much of his life. He was related to and influenced by famed artists Mungo Martin and Henry Hunt. Like his contemporary Kwakwaka'wakw artists, he was part of a resurgence of First Nations art in the mid-20th century.

Donated by Joyce Wolfe.
