Welcome
About The Outside Foundation
The Outside Foundation was founded in 2014 with a mission to get kids outside and to preserve and protect our local environment. The Foundation seeks to develop, enhance, and expand programs directed at providing opportunities for children, and their families, to explore and develop lasting connections with our local waters and ecosystem, regardless of socioeconomic barriers. With the goal of fostering the development of environmental stewardship, our focus is threefold: education, involvement, and empowerment. Our programs focus on our two most valuable community resources: our children and our local environment.
Our 2023 Highlights:
- This fall, 951 students from 8 middle schools in Beaufort County (public, charter, private and homeschool) participated in our "Kids in Kayaks" program! We are projected to take over 1,400 seventh graders kayaking this year from every middle school in Beaufort County. Your support makes it possible to “leave no child in the classroom.”
- We partnered with 24 restaurants to capture oysters shells for recycling and use in building new oyster reefs called “living shorelines.” This year alone our recycling efforts have diverted 30 tons of shell from the landfill.
- Partnering with the SCDNR, we built 5 new oyster reef (Skull Creek near Hog Island, Broad Creek near Long Cove, 2 along the May River near the “bluffs” of Palmetto Bluff, and along the shoreline of the 18th fairway of the Harbortown Golf Links). These “living shorelines” will not only provide a habitat for numerous species but also stabilize our shorelines against erosion caused by boat wake, storms, and rising water levels, including “King Tides.”
- We organized and facilitated over 20 trash & litter pick-ups in our parks, waterways, and beaches, removing over 2 tons of trash this year with over 1,500 volunteer hours! We have removed 10 tons of trash from our local environment since 2014.
