Artist Statement: Alpenglow is the phenomenon that causes mountains to glow as the sun dips below the horizon. It is a testament to how things can appear the most beautiful right before they fade from sight. The sliver of rosy light portrayed on Mt. Werner in this piece symbolizes a sliver of hope during the climate crisis. As it threatens the natural beauty of our home, I hope we are able to realize just how valuable the environment is, not just in providing us with life, but surrounding us in breathtaking views.
Artist Bio: Sloane Speer graduated from Steamboat Springs High School in 2024. She grew up in the valley, surrounded by art, music, and mountains, which inspired her creativity and passion for the environment. She works with oil, acrylic and mixed media, and much of her art reflects her hometown’s natural beauty.
