About the Artist

French painter and printmaker Max Papart (1911-1994) is best known for his depictions of stylized figures, still lifes and landscapes rendered in a colorful Cubist style. Born in Marseille, France, the artist studied at the School of Fine Arts in Marseille before moving to Paris in 1936, where he began exhibiting at the Salon des Indépendants. “Untitled” (1988) presented here dates from his 20-year period of artistic productivity and collaboration in the United States where he was influenced by works of pure abstraction. Today, Papart’s works are in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and the National Gallery in London, among others.
