Plain air painting holds my heart. Painting quickly to capture the rapidly changing light and colors requires confidence and an ability to simplify. It’s absolute magic when it all comes together.
During these strange and frightening times, painting has become a lifeline. While I consider painting as a mostly solitary pursuit, it is not a lonely one.

Susan Matthews picked up a brush for the first time in the fall of 2000 and it has hardly left her hand since. “From the moment the color hit the canvas, I was consumed. I love the learning process and I love the work.”
While she paints still life and figurative work, Susan is most attracted to simplified landscapes. Having visited over 25 countries, she draws heavily from her travels for inspiration. “My years spent riding in the Rocky Mountains forged a deep connection to the earth and to wild life.”
Susan taught art at Braitman Studios in Charlotte, NC for seven years and was a founding member of the Online Artist’s Guild. She has been represented by galleries in Charlotte, Blowing Rock, Princeton and NYC. Her works are in private collections throughout the United States.
