Wood
6", 7.5", and 9.25" long
Artist: Will Wheeler
The 2020 theme represents so much of Will's interest in sustainable craft. He chooses to work using mostly hand tools and human-powered techniques. This practice limits his output to a scale in harmony with the forests from which he harvests the materials for his woodenware and furniture.
These spoons are carved using a hatchet and knives with no power tools. They are made from a birch tree that fell over during a storm, along the Presumpscot River Preserve trail in Falmouth. The spoons are meant to be used! They are finished with a durable and food safe tung oil/citrus solvent blend and will hold up well to daily use. To maintain, hand wash with warm water and mild soap. Do not soak or put them in the dishwasher.
Will's interest in woodworking began during his training in Preservation Carpentry at the North Bennet Street School in Boston. Since graduating in 2015, Will has worked as a carpenter, renovating historic buildings and contemporary homes. He has studied traditional carving and chair-making and is currently engaged in the Craft Apprentice Program with Kenneth Kortmeier of the Maine Coast Craft School.
