He’s made just three starts and last time moved from an allowance race to a Grade 1, and stretched out from six furlongs to 1 1/8 miles while finishing second to champion Fierceness in the Florida Derby. Catalytic had an awkward start as he hit the gate before moving into a forward position. He has reason to move forward Saturday in his second route attempt, and the natural speed he possesses could help keep him up out of trouble in the large field. His trainer, Saffie Joseph Jr., and his jockey, Jose Ortiz, recently teamed to win the $1.25 million Oaklawn Handicap with Skippylongstocking.
