Original art by Edward Gorey illustrating an appreciation he wrote of E. F. Benson’s Lucia novels for the May 1986 issue of Vogue magazine, just before the British Channel Four Mapp and Lucia television series appeared on U.S. screens. In his article (“I Love Lucia”), Mr. Gorey confesses to having reread the novels at least every two years since he first encountered them during World War II; he refers to them as having been “[w]ritten with great good nature and the lowest possible view of human nature.”
