Description
Glass
18" x 20"
Artist: Lisa Blanchard
Winning bid of this piece includes a tour and private workshop with Lisa at Glass Mermaid Studio: Come tour my studio on the water in Freeport. I will show you different processes that I use to create my work. I will demonstrate how I make beads on my torch, and make a custom bead for you. You get to pick the glass and shape of the bead! We will also explore kiln formed glass, and make a small piece together that will get fired in the kiln. Finished glass pieces will be available a few days later. Yes you can bring a friend!
My imagery of the "Edge of the Sea", includes Horseshoe Crabs, Seaweed, Shore birds, and migrating butterflies! The Rachel Carson quotes are as relevant today as they were 50+ years ago. I custom made all the glass components for this piece, some areas are 5 glass layers thick. The glass is translucent, so is appropriate to hang either in a window or on a wall. It is a heavy piece, and I am happy to consult with the purchaser ways to safely display.

Growing up on the coast of Maine, I am lucky enough! Lucky even more to belong to a family that is both curious about the world around us and artistic. Generations have given me this gift. An early inspiration in my life were books by Rachel Carson and by the drawings and explorations of Kate Furbish (a distance relative!) This quote by Rachel Carson; “The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction", is just as important today. For this piece of art , I have incorporated quotes from Rachel Carson and elements from the sea and crafted them out of glass. This glass art can be hung in a window, displayed on a stand or even hung or your wall.
