Every painting is a small adventure, an interpretation of something I see and love which can take me in unexpected directions. It's a conversation between the paint, the subject I'm painting, my eyes, heart and senses. The colors and shapes of fruits, flowers, and vegetables are a frequent source of inspiration for me.
Painting for me is primarily a celebratory act, a way of declaring my delight in the beauties of the natural world so abundant in Maine. This painting is a celebration of local farmers and the good, healthy food that they provide, and a celebration of the bonds of community that exist between those who grow food and those who purchase it and eat it. Supporting local organic farmers is a part of my response to the climate crisis. Supporting local farming and farmers gives me hope.
Sukie Curtis lives and paints in Cumberland, Maine, where she has started a multi-year project of planting her gardens with native plant species to better support biodiversity and especially to support all kinds of pollinators.
