Description
Karakul wool rug
32" x 48"
Artist: Christine Farrell
This rug was completely hand made using wool from Karakul sheep, known for centuries as the source for “Persian” oriental rugs. Due to the long coarse fibers of the sheep, this rug will last a long time and will most likely become an heirloom for your family.
Karakul sheep are born in various colors, ranging from brown to black to red to white to grey. Once the wool is sheared in Virginia, the wool is hand dyed to my color specifications. Depending upon the original color of the sheep, the yarn colors will very from skein to skein, resulting in unique colors and one-of-a-kind rugs, neither mass-produced nor duplicated.
The rug may be used as a runner or may be mounted on a wall as a unique piece of art.
Christine has been an artist since her very early days when she was enrolled by her mother, an oil painter of Maine landscapes, in painting and drawing classes. Once Christine retired to Maine, she found a way to combine her love of the rugged Maine coast with her love of creating gorgeous landscapes through fiber.
As our Maine seasons change due to climate change , I speculate we need to record our natural world before unforeseen damages alter our surroundings. By using wool, a natural product, I endeavor to capture the brilliant colors of each season for our future.
