Artist Statement: There is a monolith of a mountain not too far from my home. Flattop Mountain stands over 12,000 feet tall, covered in spruce trees and delicate ecosystems. The 24-million-year-old mountain was formed by volcanic events and glacial erosion. What is left today is the reminder of our small presence in an immense span of time. This mixed media painting on stretched canvas is very chaotic with oil and oil pastel telling a story of trees, snow, erosion, growth, and mystery. There are cliffs that bolster the sides of the mountain and the access to the top is from a long meandering hiking trail. The silhouette of the owl reminds me of how fleeting and fragile our life is here in this wild place we call our home.
